2020 Diwali Release Movies

This year we watched 2 of the Diwali release movies - Mookuthi Amman and Soorarai Potru - thanks to the O.T.T platforms. Both were interesting for their segment of audiences.

Mookuthi Amman
Mookuthi Amman:

Mookuthi Amman, is a God movie of a different kind. Upon watching this movie, I understood one God (Goddess here) can become jealous of another God. The movie is more about God Vs Godman. In reality Godman become God themselves. One can realize that at one point of time, Siradi Saibaba should have been a Godman, with some good qualities. Thus we can come to conclusion that, with time, Godman become God themselves. We can even see statues of the prominent disciples of Saibaba, and they also are worshipped as God.

The movie is all about who wins at the end: God or Godman, leading to an obvious ending. The best thing about the movie is that they shown the Greeneries of Nagercoil in its full. Many parts of it being shot in Vellimalai and Vattakottai.

Being the son-in-law of Nagercoil, and a person who likes the city a lot, I know its landscapes and greeneries very well. Earlier I thought that the story will revolve around Mookuthi Amman, the Goddesss in the famous Kanniyakumari Amman temple, and the areas around the temple and Kanniyakumari beach.

RJ Balaji keeps on talking, but think its needed for the role he's portraying, a Local TV reporter & the first son of a family with only younger sisters. As it happens to every Guy in such a setting - no one in the family listens to him or minds his words ;-).

Vellimalai is shown in full length and breadth. Also Vattakottai, which is shown as the Godman's ashram. The performance of the Godman is fantastic.

The movie is worth a watch. Kids too enjoyed. My little friend Deepak initially was scared to watch God movie, as he felt that God will look similar to Ghost as shown in Ghost movies. I told him that God will be beautiful and will come in a three-layered make-up, and it did :-). The Goddess was beautiful indeed.

Thank God, none in the movie spoke Nagercoil slang, which made the movie completely understandable to me, else I would have needed my friend's service to translate it to neutral Tamil :-).

Capt. R. Gopinath
Capt. R. Gopinath

Soorarai Potru:

Story of R. Gopinath, founder of Deccan Airlines. Anyone with Entrepreneurial apatite will like this kind of movie. Suriya was the only disturbing factor as far as I was concerned, as I am not a fan of him and avoid watching his movies. But still went ahead due to its story, though my friend also hesitated to watch his movie.

A kind of movie that drives one emotionally, and hence keeps us tied to it till the end. The hero, from a normal background faces lots of hurdles, financial hardships, betrayals, opposition from the powerful elite lobby and inactions from the Govt machinery. At every step, he never loses hope, keeps banging until the door opens for him.

Finally, things happen as expected. Hard, constant, continuous, un-ceasing work never goes un-rewarded. The movie is a good entertainer - but for Suriya. But, however hard I try, I have to agree that his presence made me uncomfortable and it was not an enjoyable experience for me.

Getting to know about Capt. R. Gopinath, he had achieved when was 52, holding onto the Entrepreneurial dream until 52 is something I admired, since that's an age, at which people in India, resolve to their fate.

Hand-Writing of My Friend

Fourteen years back, in the initial days of our marriage, my friend was surprised to see my hand-writing. My normal way of writing is Cursive Writing.

[Pic: My Cursive Writing (from my exercise workbook)]

She was happy to see my hand-writing wanted to write like that and challenged that she write like that in 21 days. I told her that I have been writing like that almost for 25 years. But still I have to agree that it took me just a week to learn that when I was in 3rd standard. So, it may be possible for her. I wished her all good luck. She wrote in a long size note for a week or so and stopped. We forgot the whole chapter after that.

[Pic: My friend's Old Hand-writing]

In the lock-down, my friend and my little-friends were improving many of their skills and acquiring new skills. When my friend saw our little-friends Cursive hand-writing, her interest in Cursive writing got rekindled. She took an old four line note and started practicing, including both small and capital letters. She came to me whenever she had doubt. So, 14-years after her initial attempt, she started re-attempted it seriously.

She kept on practicing, day-in and day-out. In the mean time, I taught her the basics of Cursive writing, like the letters can either lean to the right, or it can remain straight. But it should not lean to the left. Leaning to the left is not cursive writing. Cursive writing originated in the days of dip pens, and this kind of writing, helped to write without lifting the pen from the paper, between each dip. It normally leans to the right, in a similar way a person leans to his write while running. I re-iterated the fact that Cursive letters should never lean to the left, as leaning to the left will actually slow down the speed of writing.

[Pic: Her practiced Cursive writing]

Her hard-work finally won. She was able to write in Cursive with speed and accuracy. Congrats to her, that she won in her challenge after 14-years.

Below, I proudly present her Cursive Hand-Writing.

My Paternal Grandfather - Memories...

The eternal truth is that at one point of time, we all will remain only as memories in some people's mind. Some don't even have such people to remember them, and they vanish from memories too, without leaving any trace that they lived on this earth once.

Morning when my Mother called to inform that today is my Grandfather's (Paternal - Appa's Appa) Commemmoration day. I used to refer him as "Uttukuli Thatha", as he worked as in Railways in a Small Railway Station called Uttukuli, that is the station next to Tiruppur railway station. Its the saem Uttukuli that is famous for its butter(Uttukuli vennai). After retirement he built a home and moved to our native, named "KeelMuduthurai" after which he became "Muduthurai Thatha". Now I remember him as Muduthurai Thatha.

[Pic: Uttukuli Railway Station]

Right from my childhood, his interaction with me was minimal and limited. At this age, I can understand that he must have had many restrictions and limitations, in talking and interacting with me, probably from people who were close to him, at that time. But still on top of that, I had a good relationship with him, and have a few memorable moments when he was almost near the end of his life. Today morning I was telling my friend about all of those, and thought why not I write those in my blog, and now I am typing this.

When I was very small, probably around 8 years old, I stayed in my native with my Paternal grandparents for a week or so. That was unique, in the sense that I was alone with them. Normally my sisters also used to stay, whenever our parents leave us with our grandparents. My parents leaving us with Grandparents, is a rare occasion. Hence that was the only instance, when I stayed alone with my Paternal Grandparents in Muduthurai.

Muduthurai is very small old-styled village, with only a few houses. My grandfather, being a retired Railway Employee commanded some respect there, which I could realize when I stayed there. There used to many visitors to home, from dawn till dusk. Muduthurai Thatha is notorious for his impeccable dressing. The formal shirts in light colors like light rose, light grey, sandal wood, were the ones he used to wear, along with a pure white dhoti. His shirts will be cleanly washed, ironed and toned. He used a have handkerchief between his neck and his shirt collar, to prevent sweat from spoiling the shirt collar.

Early in the morning he used to get ready, and along with him I also used to get ready. Then we both used to walk to Puliyampatti, a small town which was at a distance of about 4 kms. Buses are rare, with just one bus running three times a day, once in the morning, once in the afternoon and once in the evening. Hence people don't depend on the bus, but rather walk or cycle to Puliampatti. There are two routes to reach that place, one is through the bus route and the other through the farms, and my grandfather preferred the one through the farms. The route at times used to be scary, with snakes spotted at times. But I used to walk with him and at times run ahead of him. Our destination invariably was a hotel in Puliyampatti, where he used to eat his breakfast. Idli, dosai, poori... I still remember the way he used to eat, enjoying every bit of it. Later on I understood that, given his health condition he was not supposed to eat those hotel food, and those food also could have contributed to his health issues. But no one can stop, or even request him. He is what he thinks he is, and he acts how he wants to be. No-one or nothing can interrupt. Such uncontrollable nature of him, in my understanding, accelerated his end.

During the same stay, he took me to the cinema theater once. It was the Sridevi theatre in Puliyampatti, evening show for the movie "Paasa Paravaigal". We started getting ready in the afternoon, walked and reached Puliyampatti. We were waiting outside the theater. Many identified him and he started talking and discussed with him. Unexpected thing happened when the ticket counter was opened. People started running towards the counter, entering into it, pushing each other, literally running on top of each other. It was not much crowded, and given the size of theater, everyone would have got the ticket and they could have entered comfortably. Hence the need to rush like that didn't araise at all, but still people were doing that. As I was watching the chaos, I noticed that my grandfather who was standing next to me vanished. Found that he was making a quick progress towards the ticket counter, pushing everyone in front of him, reached the counter and got the tickets - a skill I never have, even today. From there he shouted "Raja Raja...", asking me to come inside. I waited for the crowd to subside, then went inside, and with no choice left, he was patiently waiting for me. We both then went inside the movie hall. We had dinner outside in the same hotel where he used to have regularly, and then returned home by walk, in the dark.

When my stay was about to end, he took me to the "Dena Silks" dress show room, to get a pant-shirt for me. He bought cloth for pant-shirt, in white and white color. As he worked as a switch man in Southern Railways, in white and white uniform, I think he had a liking for white and white dresses. I noticed that he was bargaining like anything with that shop owner, to reduce its price - another skill I don't have, even now. Finally he got it at a price closer to what he had asked for, and at his level, the bargain was a success. The tailor who was sitting in front of "Dena Silks" with his tailoring machine, Natraj tailor, was our neighbour in Muduthurai. He took measurements and we got the dress on the next day in our home. I think I was wearing that dress on my return trip.

Another instance of my interaction with him happened in Satyamangalam, when he was in my Aunt's home (my father's first younger sister), when he was undergoing a treatment for a would in his right palm. He was hospitalized and that was the reason for our trip to Sathyamangalam. After he was discharged, he and Paati were staying in Athai's home. One day he wanted to go to a temple which was on the other side of the Satyamangalam bridge, that was on the river Bavani. I was studying in 7th standard at that time, and I accompanied him. We walked from home, reached the bridge, walked over the bridge, reached the other side, and then walked towards the temple. All through the way he was talking with me, something that he rarely used to do. The temple was locked, and we waited outside for sometime. During that time too, he was talking to me, at length. Once the temple opened, we went inside, prayed go God, and returned  home. That was my last interaction with him.

[Pic: Satyamangalam Bridge]

On 28-Aug-1991 night, our regular postman came to our home with a telegram. It carried the message of my Grandfather's demise. Addressed to my father, it said "Your Father Expired. Start Immediately". It was sent by my father's cousin brother - Manohara Chitapa. By that time, we had laid our mats, and were ready to sleep. All of a sudden we packed and started. We went in bus and reached our Grandfather's home early in the morning. I still remember most of what happened on that day, but I don't want to write about them here.

A couple of days later, my Grandmother gave items, that my Grandfather used, to other members of the family. Some got his gold ring and other valuable stuff. She gave his "HMT Kohinoor" watch to me. It was somewhat in a dilapidated condition at that time. Later, I, with the help of my father, took lot of efforts to repair, recover and preserve it. I preserve that in pristine condition from that time onward. Whenever my Aunt (Appa's second younger sister) sees me with that watch on my wrist, she remarks "Enga Annanoda (referring to her Father as Annan) watchu", with a smile that I couldn't deciper whether it indicates happiness or regret. After a long time, today I keyed it and wearing it now, as I am typing this article.

[Pic: My Grandfather's Watch - HMT Kohinoor]

At 66, he left for heavenly abode. But by that time, his son, and two daughters were married and well-settled. That was also the start of the second phase of my Grandmother's life, which in my view, was another reasonably enjoyable phase, with my Grandfather's pension, supporting her daughters and their families.

From the way I look and talk, many used to say that I almost resemble my Grandfather, but for his bald head (By the way, I am a few inches shorter than him). So, he still lives, and he will continue to live, like how I also will continue to live on this earth forever.

When I saw "Gupt"

I was in my first year college in UG and was a hosteler. It was the initial days of my hostel life and I was slowly get accustomed to its lifestyle, when one day, some of my hostel mates asked me if I can join them for a movie trip. After some thought I said "Ok", got ready and started with them. Coimbatore was a new city to me, and in that bus journey to Pookadai, which was in R.S. Puram, I was gazing outside to see how the city looks like. We got down from the bus and headed towards the "Central" theatre. After getting the tickets, we entered the big hall of the theatre. It was an old theatre, where my Father had also seen movies, while he was in hostel in Coimbatore.

[Pic: Coimbatore Central theatre]

Got to know that it was renewed recently and as part of the renewal, it also became a DTS theatre. As I entered, the movie "Gupt" had already started, and observed that the sound was coming from different directions. I was confused and kept on turning my head and looking in the directions from where the sounds came. When I sat on the chair, a dog was barking on the screen, and the sound came from somewhere under my chair, as if the dog was below the chair. That was a wonderful experience. As an audiophile, I was amazed and was enjoying the crystal-clear sounds. Shortly afterwards, the song "Duniya haseeno ka mela" started and that was the first time I enjoyed seeing and listening to that song in DTS sound, an experience that I am unable to explain in words now. The song still remains my favorite and every time I hear that song, I remember the experience I had on that day.

[Pic: Bobby Deol - Hair Style]

Another thing I noticed was the hair style of its hero "Bobby Deol", a different version of funk style, that was famous at that time, and I liked it the moment that I saw. I decided that someday I will have that hairstyle. Known as a "sombu"(Geek), I thought how people in my known circle will react when I have that hair-style. This dream came true after 12 years. I also wanted to dance like him, and this dream also came true nearly after 18 years. I also wished to do one more thing at that time. I will tell about that once it gets realized ;-).

The story was a "Crime Thriller". But it had an easily guessable story. Typical masala type story of the late 90s and the early 2000s. Was still an enjoyable one.

The next major breakthrough in my movie watching experience was watching a movie that had atmos sound feature. This time I watched with my father. Will try to write about it sometime.

The very first purchase of my life...

Afternoon during a conversation with Amma, she happened to touch upon the purchases I made when I was a small boy, especially the very first purchase I made in my life. The very first item I bought, going alone on my own - you wont believe - was raw mutton (the uncooked one).

As Amma says, I was around three-and-half years old, when I made this first purchase. I uniquely remember most of what happened on that day, due to the unique nature of the incident. I should be between 3.5 to 4 years old, as I still remember that incident.

It was Marie Akka, who was a sort a middle-age lady, in those days, who happened to stay two homes away from our railway colony home. As I and my first sister were small kids, it seems Amma used to give money and a small vessel to Marie Akka when she visits the Kambi Kadai, a small daily market in our locality. Marie Akka will buy the the non-veg that Amma asks for and hand over the vessel with the non-veg item along with the change, if any.

On that particular day, Marie Akka had started from her home and had reached the farther end of our block, but was still visible. Amma called her "Akka... Akka...", but she had gone so far that she didn't hear and didn't respond. I was standing next to Amma, clutching her saree. Amma immediately gave me a small vessel, and some money. I vaguely remember that it was a one rupee note and some coins, but I do not know how much it exactly was. She told me that "Nooru Nenju Kari" (100 gms of Chest mutton) and asked me to hand over the vessel and money to Marie Akka and tell her the same "Nooru Nenju Kari".

I collected those items and immediately started running towards Marie Akka, repeating the words "Nooru Nenji Kari" in my mind, so that I don't forget it. Marie Akka dis-appeared, and after running for a few minutes, I myself reached the market. I knew where the non-veg stalls will be, and continued to run in that direction, repeating "100 Nenju Kari" in my mind and searching for Marie Akka.

I could never find Marie Akka. But a person in the first mutton shop asked me what I want, upon seeing the vessel in my hand, which I was managing to hold with both my little hands, that also had the money in it. I immediately replied "Nooru Nenji Kari". He immediately took the vessel along with the money from my hand, cut a piece of mutton from a big one that was hanging, weighed, placed it in the vessel and gave it back to me. He also gave me some change, and asked me to give it safely to Amma. I said "Sari" ("Ok"), and started walking towards our home.

Amma was still standing near the entrance of our home, anticipating my return. She was surprised to find me with the vessel with mutton. I also handed over the change to her. With that, her dependency on Maria Akka ended. I remember going many such trips to the market, and always went to same first shop, who gave me what exactly I asked for, along with the correct change.

Airport trip in my Bicycle - A drive down the memory lane

Morning when I thought of going for long rounds in my bicycle, the spot that came to my mind was the airport. When I was in high-school, I had many trips with my grandfather to this location in my cycle. Sometimes, we used to go in my Dad's Raleigh cycle too. It is approximately around 7 km from our home. Normally we used to go in the afternoon, post lunch, reach there around 3:30 PM, see an aeroplane (that's how it was pronounced in those days) that lands, wait until it takes-off again, and then we used to return. That's all.  No tea, coffee, water or snacks in-between. In those days we used to refer to that place as aerodrome.

After a long time, today I slept almost till 10:00 AM. As soon as I woke up, took bath, got ready, had breakfast and set out on my cycle for the trip. Started from home around 11:15 AM. On way thought that if I take photographs on the way, then I can make a good write-up on the trip. Luckily I had my phone, which I normally do not carry during my cycle rounds.

[Pic: Ibrahim Kadai, without the Ibrahim Kadai]

Went till Ibrahim kadai from our home and stopped there for a while. Saw the empty land there. There used to be a famous tea shop there in those days, that used to be always crowded. A small grocery shop also used to be there next to it, to its left.

[Pic: Armoury Gate]

From there took the diagonal road to C-type bus stop area, and from there went to Armoury gate. This place has changed a lot. Lot of shops on either side, with many people flocking back and forth. From there went to the F-Type elephant park. I had used this road for about 9 years to go my school, which was next to it. In my childhood upon hearing the word "elephant park", I assumed that elephants used to be there inside. But later got to know that it was small elephant statue inside the park, that gave its name. Its actually part of a fountain, and from its truck, that points upwards into the sky, water used to sprinkle. The park appears to be abandoned now.

[Pic: F-Type Elephant Park]

Once we cross the park, comes the famous "Railway Mixed High School - English Medium", where the "Mixed" stands for "co-education". Later on I was mocked several times, when I said that I studied in "Railway Mixed..." where many used to ask "What was mixed...". In fact nothing was mixed, as in those days, mixing was next to impossible. Later on while seeing the next generation mixing, I could only give a sigh of regret that I should have born after ten years :).

[Pic: Railway Mixed High School]

[Pic: Road from Railway School English Medium to Tamil Medium]

On the way saw the Railway School tamil medium, which had become Kendriya Vidyalaya now.

[Pic: Kendriya Vidyalaya]

[Pic: Kedi Billa Killadi Renga home]

[Pic: The same home in Kedi Billa Killadi Renga movie]

Then went on straight on the road towards the old church, saw the house where the movie "Kedi Billa Killadi Renga" was shot, and from there took the diagonal behind the church that takes to the malaiadivaaram road, and reached the malaiadivaaram temple. After Sai baba came inside that temple, the temple lost its old name and acquired the new Golden Sai baba temple, which became my favorite temple here in the recent days.

[Pic: Golden Sai Baba temple]

Then took the Ponmalaipatti main road, and headed towards the Pudukottai road. The road with Greenery on both sides, look very beautiful, as always.

[Pic: Ponmalaipatti main road, pudukottai road junction]

The Pudukottai road started appearing. Took a left turn and headed towards the Airport. Within ten minutes, the airport's runway started appearing. In those days, the main road used to be a concrete road. Now its a tar road. After a couple of minutes, reached the airport. Saw a big D-Mart Super Market in front of it. In those days, when I went with my grandfather, I just used to go inside the aerodrome in my cycle. Now I doubt, if I can ever go inside in my cycle. I was a bit hesitant to take a photo of the entry and the exit gates, as taking photo around these areas is prohibited. But as there was no sign board saying so, I managed to take photos of the entry and exit gates.

[Pic: Trichy Airport Road]

[Pic: Trichy Airport Wall]

[Pic: Entry and Exit gates]

In those days, we used to go inside, park our cycle, and wait for the aeroplane to arrive. By that time, a huge crowd used to gather. We will see the airplane alighting, passengers coming out of it, Then taking a turn, and after sometime taking off again. Then we will start back to home. Today, none of that happened. After many international trips, I no longer fancied airplanes, or looked at them at awe. In fact, I understood that it was the most boring of all other modes of transport.

[Pic: A view of Ponmalai from Airport Road]

[Pic: A view of Ponmalai from Old Church]

I returned by the same route. Somewhere, in between, I started feeling that my grandfather was also travelling with me, with the same smile that he used have in all those trips.
